Radical reformers who yearned to go beyond the magisterial reforms of Martin Luther and John Calvin. At their founding Protestants joined in calling these denominations heretics. Not so much concerned with theology, the called themselves to base their living on the Sermon on the Mount. Mennonite beliefs are based on a confession of faith written in 1632 and consisting of eighteen articles. Early Mennonites shunned involvement with secular organizations. The Amish movement began in Mennonite congregations.
