Friends (Quaker)

Founded in the year 1650 by George Fox

This Major Sect is 369 years old.

Unsatisfied with the many already existing denominations of his time, the founder claimed to discover a personal relationship with Christ. According to Fox, every person has an inner voice available that can guide one to God. Theology, rules, and dogma were deemphasized. The term Quaker was coined by a judge who was prosecuting Fox for his beliefs. Thousands of Quakers were killed in England and the American colonies for their rejection of established churches. Once the persecutions stopped and Quakers were allowed to organize, their members were required have their inner voices tell them to adhere to the strict disciplinary policies established or else they would be disowned from the community.
