Evangelicals span denominations. In America the popular belief was strong that the individual was the basic religious unit. Denominational affiliation was a matter of free choice. If you did not like one church, you could go to another, or start a new one. Accordingly, the strongest religious loyalties of many people were attractive preachers. This became especially apparent after the Civil War when, as in the business world, free enterprise produced great stars who rose to the top of public acclaim.
